Women's Rugby

True or false? To play rugby you've got to be big and butch? For those of us who have had many years of enjoyment from rugby, the answer is clearly false. Whilst it may help to be big and strong for certain key positions, rugby is one of the few games that needs players with a wide variety of different skills, sizes and shapes to make up a team. Indeed, teamwork is the key to enjoyment of rugby, both on and off the pitch.

From the title, you have probably realised that this article is about women's rugby, and there's no reason why women shouldn't get the same enjoyment from the game and from the camaraderie that men do. The island has a proud tradition of women's rugby and has provided many Welsh rugby internationals in the past. In recent years the amount of women playing rugby has dropped off, which has made it somewhat difficult for those who do want to play.

We are working with the Welsh Women's Rugby Union (WWRU) and the island's rugby development officer to reverse this drop in popularity and to provide a long term future for women's rugby on Anglesey. As a result, we are setting up an Ynys Mon Women's rugby team, based at Menai Bridge Rugby Club. This is open to women of all ages. To feed this adult team we will also be starting Menai Bridge under 14s and under 17s teams. Those over 16 can play for the adults team with parental permission. It is worth noting that all coaches are UKCC and WRU qualified, and have been CRB checked.

Training will take place 7pm on Tuesday evenings, with the emphasis on fitness and fun. Women's rugby is normally played on Sundays, however, when there is no game there will be training at 1pm, which will look more at the technical part of the game, such as the scrum, the lineout or the laws of the game. Don't worry if you don't know the first thing about rugby, as we will explain as we go.

So if you're female, over the age of 11 and you have an interest in rugby we would love you to come along and find out more. Whether you just want to help out, train for fitness, fancy yourself as a future Welsh captain or just want more information contact Len on 01248-853120 or Sophie on 07727 614220. Ynys Mon Rugby Development Officer, Dafydd Myrddin, can be contacted on 01248-752036.
